Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not believe it is “realistic” to aim for the Premier League title right now.

Not that anyone had any hopes of one but the very manager of United insists the club does not have the pedigree to return to their glory days.

When asked if the Red Devils could stick up a run for the Premier League title next season, Solskjaer replied, “That is the aim, of course.

“I’m not saying it is a realistic one. We are behind and a fair rate behind the top one [Liverpool] now, who we play on Sunday and we’ll see where we are against them. But with a few signings, with the improvement these are making, in the next couple of years we want to do that. Supporters and the club alike are not happy with not challenging for the top position in the league.

“That is where we feel we should be and many of today’s supporters have lived that period where we won the league consistently.”

Manchester United are expected to make at least a few changes this January with a host of names linked to the side. One of them is Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes, who has been tipped to replace Paul Pogba in midfield.

Solskjaer was pressed on the Portuguese’s potential arrival. He said, “I know we’ve got the resources. We’ve got the backing if we need to go into the transfer market. We are still up there (financially), so still in a good place.”

Is that a hint that a deal is in place or are we going to witness another Erling Haaland scenario?
