Manchester United have moved ahead of cross-town rivals Manchester City in the race to land Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, according to Sky Sports. The Red Devils have lodged an improved £70m bid and are looking to beat their neighbours to the Englishman’s signature.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been on the lookout for an able defender to partner Victor Lindelof in the heart of the defence. United upping the ante to sign Maguire is also in accordance with the Norwegian’s transfer strategy of targetting young players.

At 26, Maguire comes with a plethora of Premier League experience and can stay at the club for the long term. However, Man City also remain interested, viewing the Englishman as heir apparent to Vincent Kompany.

Jose Mourinho was also keen on signing Harry Maguire last season as Ed Woodward refused to meet the asking price. Until now, both the Manchester clubs were willing to shell out £65m, with the Englishman inclined more towards a move to the Etihad.

Leicester City are hoping to earn £80m for Maguire, but United’s latest bid could also be too good for the Foxes to refuse.
