Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the PSV Eindhoven star.

Steven Bergwijn has officially shut down all transfer rumors of him joining United, by signing a new long-term contract with his club on Friday.

The Dutch international was linked with a number of Europe’s top clubs this summer, with Manchester United and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich among those reportedly interested in the winger.

But the 21-year-old, who joined PSV at the age of 13, has now ended speculation by committing his long-term future to the Eredivisie side, after penning a new five-year contract until 2023.

Explaining his decision, Bergwijn told PSV’s official website: “This is the right decision.

“There were other options, but ultimately everything has to fit. For me, but also for PSV, and the result is that I stay here with great pleasure and with great confidence.”

Head coach Mark van Bommel expressed his delight at tying down one of PSV’s most prized assets, Bergwijn having scored 14 league goals last term.

“Steven has exceptional qualities and you, of course, like to have such a player in your team as a coach,” he said. “It is fantastic news that he will stay.”

Since making his first-team debut in 2014, the winger has gone on to make 127 appearances for PSV and has helped the club to three league titles.

He has also earned seven caps for the Dutch national team and was part of Ronald Koeman’s recent squad for the Nations League finals.
