Manchester United target Jan Oblak will renew with Atletico Madrid

According to a report in Spanish outlet AS, Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak is set to sign a contract extension with the club, that would keep him at the club until 2022.

His current deal expires at the end of 2020/21 season, with a release clause of €100m, but an agreement of an extension has been reached between the two parties and the official announcement is imminent (next week) from the club.

After manager Diego Simeone signed his extension, he made it a priority to keep Oblak for as long as possible.

The contract negotiations were delayed due to the discussion of the release clause. The CEO of the club Gil Marin wanted it to increase up to €150-200m.

Oblak’s salary will now be close to €10-12m a year. The 26-year-old is reportedly happy with the agreement and has forgotten the lucrative offers from some of the big European clubs.

The Slovenian goalkeeper is considered one of the best in the world and has been a target for Manchester United in the past. The Red Devils have been unsure of the future of David de Gea, who is yet to sign a contract extension, hence, they kept a close eye on Oblak.

Even PSG came calling to sign the stopper, but nothing materialised.

Now with Atleti securing the player’s future, the European giants might have to look somewhere else if they are in for reinforcements between in goal.
