Benfica has officially exercised their option to buy Spanish defender Alvaro Fernandez for €6 million, despite the 21-year-old not meeting the required match appearances to make the transfer obligatory.
Fernandez, who joined Benfica on loan in January following a stint at Granada, started only seven out of 27 possible matches.
However, Benfica has been impressed with Fernandez’s progress and development, deciding to move forward with the transfer regardless.
The deal, set at €6 million with an additional €3 million in potential add-ons, represents a significant financial boost for Manchester United.
This transfer will be recorded as pure profit, given that Fernandez arrived at Old Trafford on a free transfer from Real Madrid in 2020.

Fernandez’s journey has been noteworthy. After being named United’s U23 Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season, he spent the subsequent season on loan at Preston North End, where he made 42 appearances.
