Manchester United made a direct approach to the representatives of Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi in December, according to Tuttosport.
United’s early inquiry for Senesi overtaken by Juventus
The club explored a potential move for the Argentine centre-back, but their pursuit has now lost momentum.
The 28-year-old Senesi has established himself as a reliable performer for the Cherries.
With his contract set to expire next summer, the player is reportedly seeking a new challenge at a higher level. This situation alerted several major European clubs.
Italian media claims United initiated contact last month. However, the club’s interest has cooled significantly following the dismissal of manager Ruben Amorim.
The proposed transfer was apparently linked to Amorim’s tactical system, which utilized a back three where the left-footed Senesi could have featured.
In the absence of a permanent manager, United have paused their move. This delay has allowed Juventus to move into pole position to secure Senesi on a free transfer this summer.
Barcelona have also reportedly been in touch with the player’s camp, but the Italian giants are currently leading the race.
Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti is a known admirer, having previously tried to sign Senesi for Napoli in 2021.
He is now a driving force behind their current pursuit. The defender’s profile is notably defensive; this season he averages nearly eight clearances and wins over two aerial duels per Premier League match for Bournemouth.
With the future managerial structure and preferred formation at Old Trafford still unclear, United are unlikely to revive their interest immediately.
The club is currently focused on appointing Amorim’s permanent successor before advancing their transfer plans.
As things stand, Juventus are the clear favourites to complete a pre-contract agreement with Senesi.
