Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly still considering a January loan move, even with the imminent appointment of Michael Carrick as interim manager.
Play or Go: Mainoo’s Transfer Stance After Carrick Takes Over
The 20-year-old England international fears a lack of regular first-team football could jeopardize his hopes of making the squad for this summer’s World Cup.
Mainoo has struggled for minutes this season, making just one start under previous manager Ruben Amorim.
That solitary start came in United’s embarrassing Carabao Cup loss to Grimsby Town. He only returned to the starting lineup for last weekend’s match against Brighton, following Amorim’s dismissal.
Sources close to the player state that his primary focus is securing a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England plans, a goal he believes requires consistent club play.
While interim boss Darren Fletcher claims Mainoo remains in a “good place” at Old Trafford, the academy graduate may push for a temporary departure before the February 2 deadline if his prospects do not improve under Carrick.
Further complicating his situation is a strained relationship with the club’s hierarchy. Mainoo remains one of the lowest-paid first-team players after contract negotiations stalled last year.
Serie A champions Napoli appear the most serious suitor, encouraged by the successful signing of Scott McTominay.
United, however, remain reluctant to sanction a loan. Mainoo’s ideal scenario is to stay and prove his worth at Old Trafford.
His immediate future could hinge on this weekend’s derby against Manchester City. A starting role and a strong performance in Carrick’s debut match might signal a change in his fortunes.
All eyes will be on the team sheet Saturday morning for the clearest indication of where Kobbie Mainoo’s career heads next.
