Under pressure Italy coach Roberto Mancini is being considered by Manchester United

According to sources, Italy’s World Cup exit has increased the likelihood of United making a bid for Mancini, who pipped Sir Alex Ferguson to the trophy as Manchester City manager in 2012.

One man’s loss, however, is another man’s gain. In this instance, the latter is United. The Red Devils have increased their attempts to hire a new manager in the coming months, according to rumours that Ajax manager Erik ten Hag has been interviewed this week.

The Dutchman is apparently one of four contenders on the club’s shortlist, along with Mauricio Pochettino of PSG, Julen Lopetegui of Sevilla, and Luis Enrique of Spain’s national squad. Following Italy’s humiliating defeat on Thursday, a fifth name might be added to the mix.

Shortly after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal, the 57-year-old was dubbed a “wildcard” candidate to be United’s next manager, with the club still looking for a replacement this summer.

Mancini ruled himself out of contention quickly after the initial rumours surfaced, stating that his main goal was to win World Cup qualifying. With that out of the way, the possibility of bringing him to Old Trafford might resurface.

After Thursday night’s playoff defeat to North Macedonia, Mancini replied to questions about his future: “We will see. Now I feel too disappointed to speak about my future, we will see. I’m sure this team has a great future. I’m supporting these players now more than ever.”
