Dortmund star Manuel Akanji has rejected a new contract and looks set to leave the club, with Manchester United interested

As Akanji’s contract ends next year, the German club may now want to sell him in order to minimise the chance of his departing on a free transfer.

According to rumours, Akanji will now quit the club after turning down Dortmund’s most recent contract offer. Manchester United has shown an interest in acquiring the defender in recent months and will most likely make an offer in the summer.

This was also stated to BILD (through The Sun), who reported he may join United this summer for roughly £20 million.

Dortmund were desperate to keep the 26-year-old, despite the expected arrival of Niklas Sule from Bayern Munich when his contract ends.

Akanji would be an excellent addition to United’s defence, which is in desperate need of reinforcements. Harry Maguire isn’t doing as well as he did when he initially signed with the club, and he’s going through a bad patch.

Akanji has represented his nation in a back three, demonstrating his flexibility. Whether the new manager prefers a back four or a back five, Akanji has experience at both at the club and international levels.
