Steve McClaren has stated that Mason Greenwood will continue to play for Jamaica. Mark Bullingham, the FA’s chief executive, has confirmed that Greenwood, who only has one senior England cap, has stated his intention to transfer allegiances to Jamaica and join McClaren at a reunion of Manchester United’s former players.
Since the Jamaican Football Federation has not yet received the required documentation to complete the transaction, Greenwood’s desire to commit to the Reggae Boyz has been called into question more and more.
In order for Greenwood to be included in the team that plays two friendlies in the UK before starting its World Cup qualifying campaign in June, Jamaica had hoped the transition would be finalized in the upcoming months. Additionally, there was optimism that Greenwood would play a significant role in the CONCACAF Gold Cup team. None of those things are definite now because of the delay.
However, McClaren, the former manager of England and former number two for Manchester United, who has been leading Jamaica since last year, remains “very confident.”
Greenwood’s Man Utd reunion moves step closer
Greenwood’s formal desire to move from England to Jamaica was confirmed by the FA earlier this month. McClaren maintains communication with the player’s camp and claims the modification is getting closer to being finished.
Previously Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant, McClaren rejoined United in 2022 as a backroom staffer of Erik ten Hag. Greenwood was no longer with the team by then, but the teenage forward was still listed until his July transfer to Marseille for £26.6 million.
In the same month, Jamaica named McClaren to head their World Cup qualifying campaign. Additionally, he wants Greenwood among the players available to him when qualifications begin in June. Meanwhile, the veteran coach will be hoping that Greenwood improves his connection with club manager Roberto De Zerbi. Last weekend, the former United player was left out of the starting lineup due to demands for more consistency.
