Michael Carrick Was Ghosted By Jose Mourinho Before Getting Fired

Newly appointed Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has not dismissed the possibility of extending his stay at Old Trafford beyond this season.

Building for the Future: Carrick’s Plan for Manchester United

Carrick stepped into the role this week with the immediate task of leading the team for their remaining 17 Premier League matches.

While the club’s announcement specified his position lasts until May, the 44-year-old left the door open for a longer tenure during his first news conference on Friday.

He confirmed no talks have yet occurred with club leadership about a permanent deal but emphasized his forward-thinking approach.

“I think we’re realistic about where we are at the moment, why I’m here and the role I’ve got to do,” Carrick stated.

“I’m certainly not coming in thinking it’s a time where week-to-week, game-to-game, we’ve got to get through it.

We want to plan to improve beyond this season.”

His title of “head coach,” rather than “caretaker” or “interim,” marks a subtle but notable shift from terms given to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick in their initial temporary roles.

Carrick, who had a brief stint as United caretaker in 2021, brings experience from two-and-a-half years managing Middlesbrough.

He expressed strong confidence in his readiness for the challenge, citing his years working under Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer at United.

“I’m happy in my skin, happy in this role. I know what it takes,” he said.

“I feel at home, I feel I’m ready and I’m really looking forward to getting to work.”

His immediate focus is Saturday’s Manchester derby against City.

However, his comments suggest he views this opportunity as more than just a short-term assignment, aiming to build a foundation for the club’s future success.
