Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has delivered a glowing endorsement of winger Amad Diallo, praising his professionalism and positive attitude as the team prepares for a crucial Premier League trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United on Monday night.
Carrick: “Amad Has Been Massive for Us” Ahead of Newcastle Clash
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Carrick addressed the media regarding the 23-year-old Ivorian, who has recently found himself out of the starting lineup.
Despite his absence from the first XI, the United boss made it clear that Diallo remains a vital component of the squad.
“Amad has been massive for us. Massive,” Carrick emphasized to club media. “He’s a big player for us, and it’s not a major downside that he didn’t start recently. His attitude has been so positive.”
Carrick explained that the decision to bench the winger was not a reflection of poor performance but rather a tactical move to utilize the squad’s depth.
In recent matches, Carrick has deployed Benjamin Sesko as the central striker, with Bryan Mbeumo operating on the right flank—a position Diallo typically occupies.
The trio of Sesko, Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha have formed a potent attack, with Sesko netting a decisive header against Crystal Palace last weekend to continue United’s fine run of form.
Under Carrick’s stewardship, the Red Devils have been in spectacular shape, amassing 19 points from seven matches. They currently sit third in the table, level on points with Aston Villa but ahead on goal difference.
A win against Newcastle tonight would see them move six points clear of Liverpool, following the Reds’ unexpected 2-1 defeat to Wolves.
While Amad has been a key player for the club over the last two years, his recent league form has dipped, with the attacker failing to register a goal or assist since mid-December.
However, Carrick has no concerns about the player’s mindset, describing him as a “dream to work with.”
“He’s got a lot of attributes, and the way he came on as a substitute didn’t surprise me,” Carrick added. “He wants to learn and keep pushing. He’s been so positive all week.”
Despite his importance to the squad, it appears unlikely that Amad will start against the Magpies, given the current chemistry of the attacking lineup.
However, with his positive attitude and Carrick’s trust, the £37 million signing from Atalanta could still play a significant role off the bench.
Adding extra spice to the occasion, Amad—who spent a season on loan at Sunderland—is likely to receive a hostile reception from the Newcastle faithful.
Carrick faces a tough decision on Tyneside, but regardless of who starts, he knows he can rely on the Ivorian’s commitment when called upon.
