Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said that he wants French winger Anthony Martial to stay at the club.

Martial’s current contract runs out at the end of this season and the winger has reportedly rejected an extension.

Earlier during the summer, there were several reports that Martial wanted to leave Manchester United and Mourinho would allow him to leave.

However, Martial’s recent performances have propelled Mourinho to keep him at the club. The Frenchman has scored four times in his last three Premier League matches.

Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Bournemouth, Mourinho was asked about Martial’s future at the club. He replied, “I don’t belong to the discussions of contracts. I don’t even know their contracts in the sense of numbers and I’m really happy with that – to not have to participate in these types of discussions.

Obviously I hope we will agree. He is a talented player – everybody has known that since he was at Monaco. Another thing is a talented player with consistency and understanding what a football match is in the globality. When you reach that level or are almost reaching that level is when you become a top player. One thing is a top talent, another thing is a top player.

When he is now much closer to becoming a top player, obviously I would like him to stay. I know the club very much wants him to stay so hopefully he is going to stay.”

Anthony Martial is Manchester United’s joint top scorer of the season so far, scoring 5 goals in 11 matches across all competitions. He will be hoping to put in another good performance tomorrow when Manchester United face Bournemouth.
