Nemanja Matic has announced he will Manchester United at the end of the season
The midfielder, 33, is under contract with the Red Devils until June 2023.
However, he stated on social media, “After much contemplation, I have decided that this season will be my final with Manchester United.” My decision has been communicated to the board, the manager, and the players.
The Serbian ace is one of the club’s most experienced players, having joined from Chelsea in the summer of 2017 for a fee of £40 million. Matic won three Premier League championships, the FA Cup, and the League Cup during his two seasons at Chelsea, but his tenure at United will conclude without a trophy.
Despite Erik ten Hag’s impending arrival, the 33-year-old midfield general has opted to finish his United career at the conclusion of the season in order to avoid triggering an automatic extension in his contract. This is believed to have shocked Old Trafford authorities, who are currently short on defensive midfielders.
Matic’s decision means he will not play under new manager Erik ten Hag, who signed to terms with the Red Devils earlier this week to succeed interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
“Thank you for all of your efforts over the previous five seasons, Nemanja, and here’s to a good end to your stay at United over the coming weeks,” United said in a statement.
