According to reports, Manchester United were very interested in signing Jan Oblak last summer as a potential replacement for David De Gea.

As things turned out, De Gea‘s move to Real Madrid never took place and United fans can now say everything has worked out for them. However, had the Spaniard indeed left Old Trafford, United’s plan to bring in his replacement in Oblak may not have worked out so well.

In a recent interview, Oblak said that he stayed back with Atletico despite interest from the Premier League because he wanted to “win titles”. United are considered to be one of the most successful clubs in the history of the game but ever since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, the club has lost a lot of its shine and are far away from being title contenders in the big tournaments.

Oblak’s interview will only deepen fears amongst the Red Devils faithful that they no longer have the ability to draw in top players as easily as before. United parted ways with Jose Mourinho recently, and have appointed their 5th manager in 6 years post the Ferguson era, winning only 3 trophies, two of which were domestic cup tournaments.

Oblak’s words will definitely not go down well with the fans in England but if seen objectively, there could be a hint of truth in them.
