Owen Hargreaves: Manchester United Need More Than Joshua Zirkzee to Win Trophies
Owen Hargreaves has expressed doubts about Manchester United’s recent signing of Joshua Zirkzee, cautioning that the £36 million acquisition might not be the answer to the club’s quest for silverware.
Zirkzee, who arrived from Bologna this summer, made an impressive debut by scoring the winner against Fulham. However, his performance in the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool left more questions than answers.
With showing glimpses of potential, including close attempts at scoring against Liverpool, Hargreaves believes Zirkzee lacks the clinical edge needed for United to challenge for top honors.
“Zirkzee has talent, but he’s not the type of forward who will guarantee you 30 to 40 goals a season,” Hargreaves commented on Rio Ferdinand Presents.
“In my time, he’d have been a solid squad player, but to compete at the highest level, you need a striker with a ruthless streak, like Ruud Van Nistelrooy.”
The former United midfielder acknowledges Zirkzee’s potential but stresses that the club needs a proven goalscorer to match the levels of competitors like Erling Haaland.
He also hints that Manchester United’s strategy might be flawed, as they are investing in players who he views as “fillers” rather than game-changers.
Hargreaves also highlighted the promising performances of academy products like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, suggesting that the club should focus on nurturing such talent rather than spending heavily on players who might not meet their long-term ambitions.
With Manchester United aiming for both Premier League and Champions League glory, Hargreaves’ comments serve as a stark reminder of the high expectations surrounding the club’s transfer policy.
