Newly appointed Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly considering the removal of Harry Maguire from his squad ahead of the upcoming season.
Paul Parker: Letting Maguire Leave is Essential for United’s Future
This potential move comes despite the English defender being a regular and reliable performer for the club this year.
Maguire, 32, has featured in eight of United’s eleven Premier League matches this term, delivering solid performances.
However, with his contract set to expire this summer, Amorim faces a critical decision.
The club must choose between offering the experienced centre-back a new deal or allowing him to depart, thereby creating space for emerging talents to secure a place in the first team.
Former United defender Paul Parker has strongly advocated for the latter option. Parker believes the club must avoid letting sentimentality influence a crucial roster decision.
He argues that retaining Maguire would hinder the progress of younger defenders like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven.
“When you’ve got [Lisandro] Martinez to come back, and then you’ve got Heaven, and then you’ve got Yoro, you don’t need another centre half,” Parker stated in a recent interview with UtdDistrict.
“You don’t need Harry Maguire there, because that’s going to stop a Yoro improving.”
Parker emphasized that the club should focus on building for the future, potentially around Matthijs de Ligt, and use his experience to mentor the next generation.
He firmly concluded that for the benefit of the overall squad, Maguire would not be a significant loss if he left on a free transfer.
While Amorim has previously praised Maguire, the defender’s age and high wages—reportedly £190,000 per week complicate the situation.
Offering a new contract would likely require a significant salary reduction.
Although Maguire’s departure would leave the squad with less experienced cover for the injury-prone Martinez, Parker and others feel the club’s long-term development should take priority.
If United decides to release him, Maguire is expected to attract considerable interest from within the Premier League.
