Roy Keane has named Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe as his preferred choice to become the next permanent manager of Manchester United.
Roy Keane backs Eddie Howe to become next Manchester United manager
The club legend believes Howe’s proven track record and calm demeanour make him the ideal candidate to lead the struggling giants.
Manchester United sacked Ruben Amorim earlier this week, appointing Darren Fletcher as caretaker while they seek an interim boss for the remainder of the season.
The search for a long-term successor is already underway, with several names in contention.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane voiced strong support for the Newcastle boss. He highlighted Howe’s extensive experience, which includes nearly 800 games in management, and his transformative work at St James’ Park.
“I like what he’s done,” Keane stated.
“He’s managed a lot of games, his teams play good football. I like his calmness – I think Man Utd sometimes need a bit of that.”
Keane pointed to Howe’s achievement of guiding Newcastle from relegation candidates to a Champions League outfit as evidence of his capability.
“Getting them into the Champions League, winning a Cup. I’d be happy to see him go in there,” the Irishman added.
However, Howe has quickly distanced himself from the speculation, emphasising his current happiness and commitment to his project at Newcastle.
When asked about potential interest from elsewhere, he responded, “No, not at this current time.”
Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Keane’s former teammate, is the favourite to take interim charge. While Keane thinks Solskjaer could steady the ship until May, he doubts he is the long-term solution for reviving the club’s fortunes.
The pressure is now on co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to make a successful appointment after a period of instability, which included sticking with then sacking Erik ten Hag and the brief tenure of Amorim.
Keane’s public endorsement has placed Eddie Howe firmly into the conversation for one of football’s most high-pressure jobs.
