Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed midfielder Mason Mount asked to play through an injury during Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United.
Amorim Explains Half-Time Decision to Substitute Injured Mason Mount
The Englishman did not emerge for the second half at Old Trafford.
Mount, who has been earning praise for his improved form this season, felt discomfort during the interval.
Amorim revealed the player’s desire to continue but explained the decision to substitute him was a necessary precaution.
“He felt something at half-time,” Amorim told Man Utd website.
“He wanted to go [on] and that is also a good thing. But we cannot lose more players if you are not 100 per cent.”
Jack Fletcher replaced Mount and performed well, helping United secure a valuable clean sheet and three points that lifted the team to fifth in the Premier League table. The focus now shifts to the severity of Mount’s issue.
The club hopes his willingness to continue signals a minor problem. United face Wolverhampton Wanderers next week and are already navigating a significant injury crisis.
Key players Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Harry Maguire, and Matthijs de Ligt remain sidelined.
Furthermore, the absences of Amad, Bryan Mbeumo, and Noussair Mazraoui due to international commitments have stretched Amorim’s squad thin.
Mount’s availability for the coming fixtures is therefore crucial as the manager seeks to maintain momentum with a depleted group.
Amorim will provide a further update on Mount’s fitness ahead of the trip to Molineux.
