Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has underlined his belief in the potential of Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee but insists the young duo still have areas to develop.

Ruben Amorim Sends Clear Message to Mainoo and Zirkzee

Mainoo, 19, enjoyed a breakthrough season at Old Trafford last year and has rapidly established himself as one of the brightest prospects in English football.

His performances were strong enough to earn him a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad, yet Amorim remains grounded in his assessment of the midfielder.

Speaking to the media ahead of United’s upcoming fixture, the Portuguese boss praised Mainoo’s technical ability, especially in attacking areas, but pointed out that the teenager isn’t the finished article yet.

“When I see Kobbie, I see a lot of talent,” Amorim said.

“But the way I see it – and I could be wrong – I see some things that Kobbie has to improve.

His pace in the game, his decision-making in build-up situations… Near the box, he’s very dangerous, and that’s why he had such a good game in the Europa League.

But at 19, he’s still developing. If I say he’s the finished player, I don’t think I’m helping him.”

Joshua Zirkzee, who arrived from Bologna last summer, has had a more measured start to life in Manchester.

The 23-year-old Dutch forward struggled to find his rhythm early in the season, but Amorim believes there has been progress—though he wants to see more hunger in front of goal.

“Zirkzee is improving, no doubt,” said Amorim.

“But I want him to be more selfish sometimes. As a striker, you need that killer instinct, that hunger to score. He’s getting there.”

Amorim’s honest assessment reflects his long-term vision at Old Trafford—one that prioritizes development, accountability, and unlocking the full potential of his players.

With both Mainoo and Zirkzee continuing to feature prominently in United’s plans, fans will be eager to see how the duo respond to their manager’s challenge in the months ahead.
