Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that he believes Sir Matt Busby was looking down on them in 1999. The former Manchester United striker was the one to score the dramatic late winner for the Red Devils as they beat Bayern Munich in the final to lift the Champions League and went onto win the treble that year.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the interim manager hailed the former United boss and said, “Oh, he laid the foundation [for United].”

He added, “You can see the way Sir Alex built the club, or rebuilt the club if you like, [it] was on the values of Sir Matt and those beliefs and principles. It would have been his 90th birthday on 26 May in 1999 for the Champions League final so, of course, I’m aware of Sir Matt’s legacy.”

Solskjaer shared his experience from that historic night, “There is a story from that night, just before the game, when his son and daughter were in the stadium and there were a couple of doves just flying up [in the air]. They both looked at the doves at the same time and said: ‘He’s watching’, and I think he would have been.”
