Only a few weeks before England called, Thomas Tuchel received word from Manchester United that he was their number one choice to succeed Erik ten Hag. Since leaving Bayern Munich in the summer, the German has been among the most highly regarded coaches without a position. Due to this, he has been connected to multiple positions, and during the summer, when the Old Trafford management were thinking about making a move, he had discussions with Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Legendary Manchester United player Sir Alex Ferguson has been freed of his ambassadorial responsibilities by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, although he is still free to accept his managerial advice. Thomas Tuchel was supposedly the main target for Ratcliffe and his INEOS lieutenants, forcing them to reevaluate their alternatives. Although the German was informed, he was in the lead to succeed Ten Hag should that materialize, England has now signed him.
Thomas Tuchel rejected Man Utd to take England job
Thomas Tuchel turned down the opportunity to take over as manager of Manchester United in favour of taking over as head coach of the England national team. Tuchel’s selection as the next permanent manager of England was officially announced on Wednesday. The arrangement was reached in January 2025. Now, Lee Carsley, the interim England manager, will rejoin the England U21 team.
According to the Times, Tuchel was informed that when it came time to fire the Dutchman, Man United wanted him to take Erik ten Hag’s place as manager. According to the source, Tuchel was United’s top choice to replace Ten Hag, who is about to lose his job at Old Trafford. But Tuchel took the English offer because he could not wait for United to make a move on Ten Hag.
