The second-longest-serving member of Manchester United is scheduled to depart Old Trafford and has already selected his next team.
Victor Lindelof joined United from Benfica in the summer of 2017 for a reported £31 million, and no player has stayed with United longer. Lindelof has played nearly 300 games for the Premier League’s biggest clubs over the last eight years at the Theatre of Dreams, where he has won the FA Cup and EFL Cup.
Although Lindelof has made at least 35 appearances in five of his eight seasons at Manchester United, he has had difficulty getting into the starting lineup this season because of fitness issues and increased competition.
Currently sidelined by a major injury, the Sweden international is Ruben Amorim’s fifth-choice central defender, behind Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, and Lisandro Martinez. Since there are so many center-backs at Old Trafford, Manchester United has been content to let Lindelof’s contract expire. He will be available for free in the summer.
Man United’s second-longest-serving player set to leave
After his contract with Manchester United expires in the summer, Benfica wants to re-sign Sweden’s center, Victor Lindelof. It is anticipated that the 30-year-old will depart Old Trafford at the end of the current campaign, and United has not inquired about an extension to his most recent contract, which he signed in September 2019.
Even though negotiations are still in their early stages, it is believed that Lindelof is a top summer target for Benfica and would like to return to Estádio da Luz.
Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez (who is now injured), and Noussair Mazraoui have been the 40-year-old’s favored center defensive options. It looks like United made the proper choice in splitting with Lindelof. Keeping a player who isn’t part of the manager’s future plans is pointless. The club will save £6.2 million in wages per year as a result of the defender’s departure.
