Villa boss fuming at farce penalty by VAR in United defeat

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith was an angry man after his team’s 3-0 loss to United.

The Red Devils did take charge of the match but had a massive stroke of luck which rolled the ball in their favor to begin with. With scores tied at 0-0 till the 27th minute, it was a blatant wrong call by referee Jon Moss to award Manchester United a penalty for a foul made by an United player!

What was more shocking however, was that VAR, the technology installed to overrule such horrendous refereeing mistakes stuck with the decision despite clearly seeing on replay footage who was at fault for the foul!

Naturally, Villa boss Smith was an unhappy man.

He said: “How someone in the studio who had the view I had only once can make that decision is beyond me. Five minutes after the game the 100 messages I’ve had from people who have watched it telling me it’s a disgraceful decision tells me my feelings were right.

“I went down to the dugout and saw it on the camera and thought it would be overturned straight away. Anyone in football knows Fernandes is trying the dragback, he puts his foot on the ball and stands on Ezri.

“We always felt that was what VAR was brought in for (to get decisions right) but obviously it’s still becoming human error, going from one man’s opinion to another.

“There have been some really poor VAR decisions this season, which is unfortunate for a system which was supposed to help the big decisions.”

Well, all said and done United ended up with 3 points and a comprehensive win at the end.
