Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann is a target for Manchester United

Manchester United are considering Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow and Watford’s Bachmann as back-up signings to replace Dean Henderson, who is poised to leave.

Newcastle has proposed Darlow, 31, to United in a possible swap with Henderson, who is hoping to join Eddie Howe’s side.

Darlow, a former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper, is aware of the talks but is now on a post-season vacation. Darlow faced United twice last season, saving a penalty from Bruno Fernandes in Newcastle’s 4-1 home defeat.

Bachmann, 27, has started 13 times for Austria since making his debut last year, playing 12 times in the Premier League for Watford.

United are open to using Tom Heaton as a backup goalkeeper, depending on the quality of the goalkeeper they sign.

Heaton, 36, returned to United last year with the expectation of being their No.2 goalkeeper, but he only played once in the Champions League group stage tie with Young Boys as a substitute.

According to sources close to Henderson, United has been a’stumbling barrier’ in his pursuit of a new club following only three appearances in 2021-22.

The 25-year-old has no objections to leaving United permanently, but the club has never sanctioned such a move and has shown a preference for short-term deals.
