Minamino went on to join United’s rivals.

But he could have easily joined the Red Devils.

Liverpool confirmed on Wednesday that they had provided the services of RB Salzburg striker Takimi Minamino after paying the player £7.25 million. The 24-year-old, who played 199 matches for the Austrian side, was also a target for Manchester United, but the Red Devils could not prevent the club from securing a January transfer window.

Unveiling the reason for the impossibility of tempting United’s Apollo star at Old Trafford, The Sun says the Red Devils were unaware of the player’s release clause. According to media reports, United boss Ed Woodward did not know the player had such a cheap waiver until the Reds signed a deal with Salzburg for his signature.

However, the 20-year-old Premier League champions were frustrated and Solskjaer turned his attention to the services of Erling Halland. The Norwegian tactician is doing everything possible to hit the teenager in the Theater of Dreams in January.

Minamino was on a long list of players that United were considering, but they believed that the player would cost around the same amount as Leicester City’s James Maddison. That meant that they were reluctant to get involved in the case, and as such did not do the due diligence that would have allowed them to work out he was easily obtained.
