Despite reports that Manchester United is interested in Joao Gomes, Wolves manager Rob Edwards insists there hasn’t been a formal offer for the midfield player. As the Red Devils prepare to restructure their midfield during the summer transfer window, Gomes has emerged as a potential target.
Casemiro, who has excelled in the engine room this season, is expected to leave Old Trafford unless new terms can be worked out. Although United has the option to extend his contract by an additional year, it is believed that the club would rather try to lower his salary than activate the extension.
Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace and Carlos Baleba of Brighton have been mentioned as potential targets for United, although both players are valued at almost £100 million. However, Gomes would fetch a far lower price of £44 million, especially if Wolves are eliminated from the Premier League this year.
Wolves issue new statement on £44m Joao Gomes
Matheus Cunha, Gomes’ old Wolves teammate, is one person who would be a huge supporter of his relocation to Old Trafford. The attacker has lavishly praised Gomes, comparing him to current Red Devils great Casemiro. Although he just signed a new contract with Wolves that will last until 2030, it is believed that an offer of about £44 million might be sufficient to allow him to go.
Gomes is still by no means United’s sole option when it comes to finding a new midfield player. Anderson of Nottingham Forest is a top target, but his £100 million asking price would pose a serious problem for the Red Devils.
Forest manager Dyche stated, “It is nothing to do with me; it is the powers that be,” in reference to possible interest in his standout midfield player. They manage both the club and the finances. If necessary, they will undoubtedly ask me what I think about the situation—not just about him, but about all of the actors involved.
