Man United starting XI 19/20

The Manchester United fans are a part of the footballing fraternity who can’t wait for the new season to commence. With legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer serving his first full season managerial stint at Old Trafford, the Red Devils have already gotten him two transfer targets he asked for.

United have signed Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka for a combined fee of £68m from Swansea and Crystal Palace respectively. However, the United boss intends to bring in more fresh legs, meanwhile trying to keep hold of Paul Pogba, who is being linked with an exit this summer.

Should United get all their rumoured targets, it will be an absolute treat to watch them, isn’t it? Let’s have a look at how the Red Devils would line up if Solskjaer gets his transfer wishes fulfilled.

Manchester United starting 11: Goalkeeper

GK: David De Gea

David De Gea is one of the most senior-most members in the squad, having arrived at Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in 2011. The Spanish shot-stopper is already on his way to becoming a United legend, having performed exceptionally well in these torrid times for the Red Devils.

He had a disappointing season 2018/19, but regardless of that, he remains one of the best players in his position to this date. To top that, he has also reportedly agreed to extend his stay at Old Trafford, all but stamping his authority on the position between the posts.

Manchester United starting 11: Defence

LB: Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw signed for Manchester United in 2015 but following a torrid spell filled with injuries and form issues, the Englishman finally showed his true colours last season.

The 24-year-old was one of the meagre positives in a disappointing season for United, as he ran the flanks and operated as a modern-day full-back.

Shaw will undoubtedly be Solskjaer’s first choice in the left-back position. If he can keep clear of injuries, the Englishman will be a treat to watch this season.

CB: Victor Lindelof

Manchester United leaked a plethora of goals last season, however, Victor Lindelof was rarely at fault back then. The Swede signed from Benfica in 2017 and had a tough start to life at Old Trafford, being in and out of the team.

But with Solskjaer’s appointment, the 25-year-old is finally finding his feet and making the centre-back position his own. Unless and until Eric Bailly can stay fit and perform regularly, Lindelof will be placed in the heart of defence at the start of next season.

CB: Harry Maguire

The one all United supporters have been pining for. According to recent reports, United have agreed on an £80m fee with Leicester City for Harry Maguire and an official announcement is imminent in 48 hours.

If the reports hold any veracity, Solskjaer will be getting a much-needed defensive reinforcement that United direly need.

Harry Maguire is probably the best center back in the Premier League following Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk. A ball-playing defender by style, the Englishman will definitely help Solskjaer’s men build attacks from the back.

His presence alongside Victor Lindelof will also ensure a proper CB pairing United have missed for years.

RB: Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Three games into the pre-season and Aaron Wan-Bissaka has already shown the Old Trafford crowd what they have missed all these years at the flanks.

Signed for £50m from Crystal Palace this summer, the 21-year-old has already started dwarfing his pricetag by showcasing his defensive abilities; his inch-perfect slide tackling is a delight to watch. No wonder Wan-Bissaka’s tremendous work-ethic and defensive skills will shore up United’s defence this season.

Manchester United starting 11: midfielders

LM: Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba has been rumoured to quit the club this summer, with Real Madrid and Juventus reportedly circling for his signature.

However, United’s most expensive signing of all time is hardly showing any discontent, having churned out impressive performances in the preseason.

Pogba has been at United for three years but failed to deliver consistently, showing sparks of what he can do on his day. And yet, he finished as United’s top  goalscorer last season
With Solksjaer planning to build a team around him, the Frenchman could be much more ferocious than before.

DM: Fred

Fred signed for Manchester United last season in a £52m deal with Shakhtar Donetsk. However, the Brazilian has failed to live up to the hype, failing to replicate his performances for the Red Devils.

Using Fred in a predominantly defensive role will be kind of an experiment for Solskjaer since the Brazilian is known to have creative qualities. However, he doesn’t lack when it comes to the defensive aspect of his game.

Add the fact that using Fred in defensive midfield will give Solskjaer added creativity from the deep position, albeit Fred will definitely have to work a little more on his defensive side of the game.

RM: Bruno Fernandes

Another foreigner Manchester United supporters are dying to see in the famous red shirt. Bruno Fernandes had an emphatic season with Sporting scoring 32 goals and registering 18 assists in all competitions for the Portuguese outfit.

Imagine the 24-year-old in a three-man midfield alongside Fred and Pogba and you will see United creating chances more than often.

Given his ability to score goals, Fernandes would also take the pressure off from Pogba in that department. If United succeed in signing Fernandes, they will definitely have their own Frank Lampard to cheer for!

Manchester United starting 11: forwards

LW: Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial arrived as a number 9 at Manchester United in 2015 but has effectively adapted to the style of playing as an inverted winger who cuts inside to score goals whenever the opportunities arise.

The Frenchman signed a five-year contract this year following Solskjaer’s arrival but has failed to impress so far, with consistency being the main issue. However, in between him and Alexis Sanchez for the left flank position, we don’t need a second thought as to who should start.

Martial, as seen in the preseason games, is also learning to track back and support his mates during defence, as Solskjaer aims to inculcate a pressing style amongst his boys.  Give him time and the Frenchman is sure to flourish in that role.

ST: Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford had a dream start to his career under Louis van Gaal in 2015. Now, it is time for him to take up the mammoth responsibility of scoring goals.

Rashford was impressive when Solskjaer joined United but eventually lost his form. This season, however, the 22-year-old will have little room to make errors, knowing that a certain in-form youngster by the name of Mason Greenwood is eagerly waiting to land his chance as United’s main striker.

RW: Daniel James

Daniel James signed for United this summer in an £18m deal from Swansea, but only time can tell if he makes that fee look like a bargain.

The 21-year-old has shown tremendous potential in his pre-season and the United supporters can’t wait to watch him bursting at defenders with his electric pace.

United have tended to the right flank position after many years and no doubt James will be a regular starter for the Red Devils in the years to come – only if he can stay true to his promising talent.
