Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel has lifted the lid on why he rejected Manchester United. The Belgian snubbed thr Red Devils to join the Red Devils last summer.

After failing to land Witsel, United moved to sign Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk. However, it is academy graduate Scott McTominay who is emerging as the first-choice anchorman at Old Trafford.

“[Sporting director] Michael Zorc made contact first, followed by [coach] Lucien Favre. I had other offers, I could have gone to Paris or Manchester, but I had the feeling that I was Dortmund’s primary target and it’s important to have a good feeling when you go to a new club.”

“After talks with Zorc, Favre and [CEO] Hans-Joachim Watzke, I made my decision.”

“Dortmund is a top club and I really wanted to join a top club, because at 29 it was perhaps my last chance.”

Witsel had an impressive season in the Bundesliga last season, where he missed the league title. However, Dortmund are set to launch a fresh new challenge to topple Bayern for the Bundesliga title with the arrivals of Thorgan Hazard, Mats Hummels and Julian Brandt.
