Manchester United defender Harry Maguire admits he should have taken a red card.

The Red Devils were beaten 2-1 by Fulham at Old Trafford on Saturday, dropping to seventh in the Premier League table.

Harry Maguire made an attempt to win a ball but caught Sasa Lukic with a high challenge which could have seen him sent off on another day.

But the former captain scored an equaliser before United conceded in stoppage time as Fulham won 2-1.

Maguire admits he could have taken one for the team when Adama Traore set up Alex Iwobi’s 97th-minute winner and accepted the red card that would have followed.

“I was on a booking myself,” said Maguire. “In hindsight, maybe I should have just brought him down, but then you miss next week. It’s easy to say now.

“We can say we should have been more cautious, we were far too naive, we can look back and assess it in terms of areas we can improve on, but ultimately over 90 minutes, we didn’t do enough to win the game.

“In the end, we’ve probably just thrown one too many bodies forward, left the middle of the pitch open and they’ve punished us with a clinical counter-attack.”
