Jose Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said that he wants four players to stay at the club. They are Luke Shaw, Juan Mata, Ashley Young and Ander Herrera.

Shaw has started the season strongly for Manchester United. His performances in the Premier League earned him an England call-up in more than a year and a half.

However, the left-back sustained a head injury during England’s Nations League match against Spain but he has recovered now. As a matter of fact, Jose Mourinho has said that Shaw will play United’s Champions League opener against Young Boys.

Juan Mata started in the club’s Premier League opener against Leicester City. He hasn’t played a minute for Manchester United after that game.

Ander Herrera has featured in only two matches this season so far. He started against Tottenham Hotspur and made a substitute appearance against Burnley.

Ashley Young has made two starts for Manchester United so far.

The contract of all four players will end at the end of this season.

Mourinho said about the future of Shaw, Mata, Young and Herrera, “I hope they will stay. We had a similar conversation last season about Marouane Fellaini and I was always saying, ‘I hope he stays, I believe he will stay,’ and I say the same thing – ‘I hope they stay’.

Luke Shaw’s evolution makes us believe that he is going in the right direction – I want to keep him.

Juan Mata and Ander Herrera, even if they are not playing a lot or if they are not starting matches, by the character point of view and by what they represent in the modern society in football they are almost unique pieces that I also don’t want to lose.”

Manchester United play their Champions League opener against Swiss club Young Boys at Bern on Wednesday.
