Manchester United to battle it out with Bayern Munich for Leonardo Bonucci

Jose Mourinho wants to overhaul his defense this summer

Manchester United are looking to bolster their squad this summer after falling behind Manchester city in the Premier League this season. Their priority is to add defensive reinforcements as the club are also expected to sell few players.

Despite having the most clean sheets and the second best defensive record in the Premier League this season, Jose Mourinho is not happy as he had to rely on auxiliary full-backs and failed to settle on a consistent central defensive axis due to injuries.

The Red Devils are one of the clubs leading the chase for AC Milan Defender Leonardo Bonucci,  reports The Sun. Jose Mourinho has already contacted him ahead of the summer transfer window.

Bonucci, who is rated as one of the finest defenders in the world, joined Milan from rivals Juventus last summer. But has endured a trouble campaign and has been the victim of instability at the club.

After spending around £200 million last summer to strengthen the squad, the Serie A giants couldn’t finish in the top four and will miss the Champions League next season. The club will be forced to sell some of their assets this summer in order to comply with the Financial Fair Play regulations.

The 31 year old is one of the players who the club will be forced to sell and Jose Mourinho’s side are willing to take advantage of the situation.

But United could face stiff competition from Bayern Munich who are also interested in the defender. They are willing to take him on a loan deal with an obligation to buy for around £35 million.

Chelsea were interested in signing Bonucci last summer and still could be interested but his preference is to play in the Champions League again after missing a year.
