Uncertainty Over Mike Phelan Clears As Manchester United Name Him As The Assistant Manager

Central Coast Mariners have clarified their position on Sporting Director Mike Phelan’s future.

Phelan is currently assisting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United but is scheduled to return to the Australian side as he is currently contracted with them. He is also believed to be very keen on taking the new technical director role which United are planning to introduce from the next season.

Phelan was supposed to end his brief stint after this ongoing campaign as he arrived only on a temporary basis. But Solskjaer went on to sign a permanent deal with the club and it has complicated his situation.

The Old Trafford hierarchy wants to appoint a technical director and the priority is to bring in someone who has a pre-existent relationship with the club. Phelan had worked with Sir Alex Ferguson earlier and knows how things work here.

A Mariners spokesperson said, “We are eager to have Mike continue on with the club but at the moment we are at the mercy of waiting to see what the future holds for Mike and United.

“We are still in constant dialogue with Mike, who has been fantastic, keeping us updated every step of the way. He’s fond of the Mariners, we’re fond of Mike, so hopefully he can continue his role with the academy.”

But Manchester United have cleared all the speculations as they have officially announced Phelan as the assistant manager to Solskjaer as the veteran will now be seen at the Old Trafford on a permanent basis.
