Manchester United can still land Serie A star

The player’s future with his club is still uncertain

Manchester United are looking to bolster their squad in the transfer window after an underwhelming campaign last season, not winning a single silverware. They finished second in the Premier League, 19 points behind Manchester City.

The Red Devils are expected to be busy in the summer transfer window and have started the transfer window in an excellent way. They have already completed three signings, teenage full-back Diogo Dalot signed from Porto, while a £52.5 million fee has been agreed with Shakhtar Donetsk for Brazil international Fred and Lee Grant from Stoke City.

Despite having the most clean sheets and the second best defensive record in the Premier League last term, Jose Mourinho was not happy as he had to rely on auxiliary full-backs and failed to settle on a consistent central defensive axis due to injuries and inconsistency.

The Portuguese manager is targeting a top class centre-back this summer despite spending big on defenders in the past two years. The club have been linked with host of defenders including AC Milan centre-back Leonardo Bonucci.

The 31 year old, who is rated as one of the finest defenders in the world, joined the Italian side from rivals Juventus for a €42 million fee last summer. He won 6 Serie A titles before joining them and was their most expensive arrival.

After spending around €200 million last summer to strengthen the squad, the Serie A giants finished sixth and will miss the Champions League next season. They were expecting a mass exodus which could involve the the Italian International after Uefa expelled them from the Europa League for breaching the Financial Fair Play rules.

But Milan have received a huge boost as they have been cleared to play in the Europa League. And it means that they can convince their star players to stay at the club for the upcoming season.

Club’s manager Gennaro Gattuso claims that he is unsure about Bonucci’s future but they will do everything possible to keep him.

“Leo is a great professional and an incredible player, and at the moment we have to listen to what he and the other players say,” Gattuso told reporters as quoted by Goal.

“We have to respect the choices of the players. Obviously he wants to win but we also want to win. We will wait and see because he is an important player that we want to keep at all costs.”
