Harry Maguire explains his failed move to West Ham

Harry Maguire has endured a difficult spell at Manchester United.

The former United skipper has fallen down the pecking order behind Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez.

He has endured a difficult spell over the past 18 months and came close to joining West Ham United this summer.

Maguire’s form deteriorated to such an extent that Erik ten Hag has used Luke Shaw in the centre-back position.

He has struggled for minutes under the Dutch manager this term even though he retained his spot in the England national team.

The England defender explains why he was not the reason behind his failed move to the London Stadium.

Maguire told Metro: “Regular game time is really important to me, it has been throughout all my career.

“The actual opportunity to go to West Ham wasn’t really agreed between both clubs and myself, so it wasn’t just my chance to say ‘yes’ and I’m going.

“The actual opportunity wasn’t there because we didn’t get far enough down the line with it. West Ham are a massive club, my focus is still on Manchester United. I want to fight for my place but, of course, game time is really important to me.”
