According to reports from the rumour mill, Harry Maguire reportedly rejected £278k per week offer from Manchester City to join rivals Manchester United. The 26-year-old completed a world-record £80m to Old Trafford, becoming the most expensive defender in the Premier League’s history.

Maguire had a straight option to choose from, with both City and United interested in his signature. However, with money never being his motivation, the Englishman decided to join the Red Devils for a salary of £180k per week. He is also in line to be made as the captain next season.

Maguire trained only thrice with his new teammates before churning out a man-of-the-match against Chelsea in a 4-0 win.

Man City manager Pep Guardiola earlier claimed that though he had a keen interest in the defender, the club didn’t have enough means to pay his transfer fee.

“He’s an excellent, top-class player,” said Guardiola.

“We were interested but could not afford it. United could afford it. He had an incredible World Cup. He’s strong in the air, good with the ball and builds it up, he’s so fast. He’s young. Congratulations to United.”

Harry Maguire is gearing up to make his second appearance as Manchester United prepare to take on Wolverhampton on 20 August at the Molineux.
