Louis Saha explains why Sir Alex Ferguson would have struggled at Manchester United today

Louis Saha has claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson would have struggled at the current Manchester United team.

The legendary coach took Manchester United to the pinnacle of glory over a period of almost three decades. He won everything there was to win the club.

However, one of his footballers (Louis Saha) feels that the Scottish manager would have struggled at the club today.

The ex-France international told GQ magazine: “It’s hard to compare two eras, because football has changed.

“United remains a huge club with a massive fan base. Commercially they are still doing great.

“They still want to bring young players through, but football has changed.

“There’s technology, VAR and social media now. Even Sir Alex Ferguson would struggle with this.

“He had a bit of social media to manage, but it wasn’t the same as now.”

He added: “Group spirit is lesser now; players are more individual.

“Players play for their branding, their own legacy, rather than the club legacy. The platform has changed.

“When I look at United’s strikers, I see differences too.

“I see strikers who wait for the ball to be hit perfectly in their spot.

“They’re not as aggressive maybe as [Ruud] Van Nistelrooy was.

“Now, a lot of forwards can do everything. They can dribble, cross and create their own chances.

“When I played we had each one or two specific strengths, which we would use all the time. It was precise and easy to read when you had suppliers of the ball like Paul Scholes.

“It seems much harder to connect now. When everything clicks it’s amazing. The United strikers have talent and massive confidence, but sometimes you feel like they lack education about what they should do all the time.

“There’s not a clear definition of the game plan like there was when I played. Maybe the managers who came disrupted the confidence and identity of the club.

“When you feel that the place is unstable you doubt yourself.”
