Manchester United plotting a late swoop for Napoli star

Jose Mourinho is keen to sign more players before the transfer window closes

Manchester United are looking to bolster their squad in the transfer window after an underwhelming campaign last season, not winning a single silverware. They finished second in the Premier League, 19 points behind Manchester City.

The Red Devils are expected to be busy in the summer transfer window and they have already completed three signings, teenage full-back Diogo Dalot has signed from Porto, while a £52.5 million fee has been agreed with Shakhtar Donetsk for Brazil international Fred and Lee Grant from Stoke City.

But Jose Mourinho wants to sign more players before the transfer window closes and is still continuing a pursuit of a new winger. He wants someone to liven up his side’s attack next season and the club have been linked with Gareth Bale, Willian and Ivan Perisic.

But the English side have been frustrated in their attempts to sign any one of them and are considering alternatives to them.

Manchester United are considering a late summer swoop for Napoli star Dries Mertens according to Italian Output TMW.

The Belgium International joined the Italian giants from PSV Eindhoven for a reported fee of €9.5 million in 2013. He has been a mainstay in the team since then, scoring 90 goals from 233 appearances and helping the club to Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana trophies along the way.

The 31 year old upped his game midway through the 2016-2017 campaign when his former manager jiggled his starting line-up and put him up front. He scored 28 goals and was behind Edin Dzeko only in the league.

The Winger was in great form last season, scoring 21 goals and assisting 9 in all competitions. He also enjoyed a stellar World Cup this year as he helped his nation to reach the semi-final.

The report claims Napoli may actually be open to letting him leave if they receive a bid of at least £35 million.
