Manchester United Squad 2019/20 – Detailed Look Into The Players.
Let us take a look at the Manchester United squad for the 2019-20 season.
Goalkeepers:
David De Gea
He is the number one man for United and has been so for the last 8 years. When Sir Alex Ferguson signed him back in 2011, as a teenager, he was the second most expensive teenager to have ever signed for United.
His start with the Red Devils was not the most prolific but with time, the Spaniard overcame all odds to become an outright star. Many had ruled him out as a flop, calling him weak, slow and indecisive after several defensive mishaps.
Now, he has become one of the best shot-stoppers in the world. In the last five years, there are hardly any other keepers who has had made more saves than De Gea while playing for a top European side. The 28-year-old has been like a wall at the back of a rather average defence line and has bailed them out of hairy situations quite a number of times.
Finally, after years of consistent service, fatigue finally set in for the Spaniard. His form took a heavy dip last season and in the process, De Gea lost his spot in the Spain first team. He will want to establish himself as the captain of the club and take United back into the Champions League bracket, where they belong.
Lee Grant
He will be the old experienced head at the club, similar to the role Robert Green played at Chelsea last season.
Sergio Romero
He is expected to serve as a back-up to De Gea and the Argentine international cannot expect anything more at United.
Joel Pereira
If he continues to impress like he has been recently, he may soon overtake Sergio Romero as the number two at the club.
Defenders:
Victor Lindelof
What a change this particular Swiss international has gone through over the past two seasons. He was signed by Jose Mourinho as a talented young defender, who oozed lots of confidence and was good enough to play out from the back.
However, under the Portuguese, all we witnessed was a player, who had little sense of discipline and poor positioning sense. That, complemented by a lack of grit and physical strength made it greatly difficult to thrive in the Premier League. Lindelof’s career was heading towards a steep downfall before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over.
The Norwegian came in as interim boss of United in December 2018 gave Lindelof the freedom to express his best traits. He is a player who likes to be more involved on the ball, dictate the tempo from the back, intercept passes and jump into tackles rather than to wait for opposition players to come to him. His aggressive mentality has made him the perfect partner to Harry Maguire and now, he is the number choice under Solskjaer.
Eric Bailly
Another long-term injury in the preseason might have ended Bailly’s career at Old Trafford. The defender who promised so much with his athletics and defending prowess, it might all be over at the big club.
Phil Jones
A defender who we do not know what to expect still!
Chris Smalling
Another error-prone player who keeps starting due to lack of options
Marcos Rojo
One more undependable name in the Red Devils roster, waiting to either get fit or simply disposed off next season.
Ashley Young
Shockingly, a club captain with a year more left in his contract. Will be unlikely for him to break into the team.
Diogo Dalot
Dalot will be the future of United but only as a backup right-back.
Luke Shaw
Another season to prove himself. Fingers crossed, injuries don’t catch up to him.
Matteo Darmian
Is he still at United?
Aaron Wan-Bissaka
A star in the making, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has very quickly justified why Manchester United shelled out £50m for him. He is only 21 years old and already one of the best right-backs in the Premier League. United fans can simply wait for him take over Trent Alexander-Arnolds’ crown soon enough.
Midfielders:
Paul Pogba
Still, the creative powerhouse of this team question remains if Pogba is committed to the long-term future of Manchester United.
Juan Mata
An experienced head like him with his intelligence on the ball will come in handy when the starters underperform.
Jesse Lingard
Still largely, a backup winger or a super sub at this level of football.
Andreas Pereira
He has Solskjaer’s backing to succeed but the Brazilian will need to prove his worth. No one can deny his technical abilities on the ball but his inconsistent displays will not be tolerated for long. Could be his breakthrough season if he works hard enough.
Fred
A difficult position to comment on the £52m signing. He hardly ever plays under Solskjaer and yet the United boss claims him to be an important player. i guess, he could carve out a spot for himself if any of the first team players suffer an injury.
Nemanja Matic
The Serbian is running out of gas fast and at 31, his days in the Premier League are limited. He needs to make sure he lasts all season and does not go missing from the break of the new year, like every single campaign.
Scott McTominay
A mature defensive presence in the middle of the park but still needs to fine-tune his game. Can see a big future for the Scotsman if he gets to continue like this.
Daniel James
The former Swansea City man is one of the fastest players on the pitch and is already starting to prove how good he truly is with his 3 goals in 5 Premier League appearances.
Forwards:
Marcus Rashford
The stage is set for him to jump out and start challenging the likes of Kylian Mbappe as the very best in Europe. He can play in any position in the final third and is already a guaranteed starter under Solskjaer. Now, it is all up to him to prove his worth.
Anthony Martial
The Frenchman’s talents cannot be denied but he might have to work harder off the pitch, on his fitness. The constant knocks and time one the sidelines has not helped his stock one bit. With Romelu Lukaku gone, he can claim his central spot in United’s attack.
Mason Greenwood
A sensation coming out of the Manchester United Academy but it might be too soon to expect much from the teenager.
