Marouane Fellaini has signed a new contract with Manchester United

The Belgian has penned a new two-year contract

Marouane Fellaini has signed a new contract with Manchester United, putting an end to speculation over his future. He has penned a new two-year contract, with the option of an additional 12 months.

He joined the Red Devils from Everton for a reported fee £27.5 million, signing a four year contract with an option to extend one year in 2013. But failed to establish himself as a regular for the club and often used as an impact sub by the managers.

The Belgian struggled under Jose Mourinho too and was very close to joining Galatasaray last summer but a deal never went through as the manager wanted him to stay as he was short in that area. The club exercised the option to extend his contract by one year.

The 30 year old has had last limited chances under the Portuguese coach last campaign as there was lot of competition in the midfield, with the arrival of Nemanja Matic. Though he managed to score 8 goals in 22 appearances in all competitions and proved as an important player.

The midfielder’s deal was due to expire this Saturday, and was heavily linked with a exit whole summer. AC Milan and Arsenal were interested in signing him.

But he has ended the uncertainty surrounding his future and is looking forward to the next season.

“I am pleased to be continuing my journey as a Manchester United player,” he said as quoted by ESPN. “I made this decision because I am very happy here. Also, I feel like this team, under Jose, still has a lot we want to achieve.

“I would like to say a special thank you to Jose for the faith he has always shown in me. My focus now is on the World Cup and I am looking forward to a successful season ahead.”

“I am very happy Marouane is staying with us,” Mourinho said. “I always believed in his desire to stay with the club and I am delighted that he has signed a new contract.”
