Newcastle United released a statement regarding sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Dan Ashworth has been placed on gardening leave after he told the Newcastle hierarchy that he wants to leave the club.

Ashworth has a well-established connection with INEOS head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford having worked together at the FA.

He is expected to be given a similar role at Old Trafford and seemingly will leave St James’ Park in the coming days.

But Newcastle would not allow the Englishman who they poached from Brighton depart cheaply.

The Magpies will be demanding £20m in compensation as Ashworth’s contract had clauses that would prevent him from beginning a new role until 2026.

Newcastle United are definitely not happy with United’s offer even though the Red Devils are yet to make a formal approach.

The lawyers are expected to be heavily involved in this deal and some sort of compromise has to be reached in the coming weeks.

A statement read: “We are naturally disappointed that Dan has chosen to leave, however our exciting journey doesn’t stop and the process to recruit a new sporting director will begin immediately. We thank Dan for his efforts at Newcastle United and we wish him and his family well for the future.”
