Premier League star confirms interest from Manchester United this summer

The player also revealed why he decided to snub the Red Devils

Jose Mourinho prioritized signing a high profile centre-back this summer as he was not happy with the defensive setup last season. He failed to settle on a consistent central defensive axis.

Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for defenders like Toby Alderweireld, Leonardo Bonucci, Diego Godin etc. They were also reportedly linked with a move for Harry Maguire.

The England International joined the Foxes from Hull City last summer on a five-year contract for an initial £12 million fee, potentially rising to £17 million with add-ons.

The 25 year featured regularly for the Foxes last term and was very impressive, scoring two goals and assisted 6 in 46 appearances. He featured in all the 38 Premier League matches and won the club’s player of the year award.

The centre-back was one of the standout performers in England’s march to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia but were beaten by Croatia.

The Red Devils failed to land the defender as the Premier League transfer window closed with the Portuguese openly expressing his disappointment of not getting a centre-back.

Maguire has confirmed that Manchester United were interested in signing him this summer but admitted he felt too much loyalty to Leicester City to leave.

“Obviously going into a World Cup there was always going to be interest if we were as successful as we were,” he said as quoted by Goal.

“There were always going to be players who came under interest, as that is part and parcel of the game.

“I spoke with Leicester after a bit of interest from clubs, and they reiterated that I wasn’t for sale and I respected that decision.

“They gave me an opportunity to play in the Premier League, when I had just been relegated with Hull. They gave me that opportunity and it is a club I am really enjoying my time at. I am playing week in and week out which is important to me.

“They have given me the platform to play at the World Cup so I feel I owe them and I respect that decision. Now I am looking forward to the season.”
