The Red Devils were heavily linked with a move for him this summer

Jose Mourinho prioritized signing a high profile centre-back this summer as he was not happy with the defensive setup last season. He failed to settle on a consistent central defensive axis due to injuries and inconsistency.

Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for defenders like Toby Alderweireld, Leonardo Bonucci, Diego Godin etc. They were also reportedly linked with a move for Harry Maguire.

The England International joined the Foxes from Hull City last summer on a five-year contract for an initial £12 million fee, potentially rising to £17 million with add-ons.

The 25 year featured regularly for the Foxes last term and was very impressive, scoring two goals and assisted 6 in 46 appearances. He featured in all the 38 Premier League matches and won the club’s player of the year award.

The centre-back was one of the standout performers in England’s march to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia this summer but were beaten by Croatia.

The Red Devils failed to land the defender as the Premier League transfer window closed with the Portuguese openly expressing his disappointment of not getting a centre-back.

The player also admitted that Mourinho’s side were interested in signing him but he decided to stay as he felt loyalty to Leicester City to leave.

United legend Peter Schmeichel has urged the club to retain their interest in Maguire and believes he can be modern day Steve Bruce.

The iconic Dane told beIN Sports: “I think Jose is right about the centre-half, and I also think he was right with the name that came up in Harry Maguire.

“I think he would really suit that team.

“Hopefully, eventually, at some point, Harry Maguire will find himself in a red shirt. He’s a modern day Steve Bruce!”
