Amad Diallo came close to leaving Manchester United

Amad Diallo was close to joining Sunderland on deadline day.

The Ivorian winger had an impressive loan spell with Sunderland last season as he registered 14 goals and four assists in all competitions, helping them finish sixth in the league.

His contract with the Red Devils expires in the summer of 2025 and a permanent exit won’t be sanctioned anytime soon.

Since arriving at Old Trafford in 2021, things have not really gone according to plan for the Ivory Coast international.

A loan move would have been beneficial for the 21-year-old if Man United cannot provide him enough first-team opportunities this season.

The lack of playing time at United was not doing him any good and he wanted to depart on a temporary basis.

Sunderland made an attempt to sign the 21-year-old winger in the final days of January.

This is according to Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman who claims that they made an attempt to re-sign Manchester United’s Amad Diallo on loan in January.

He said: “Amad would have been one of those three or four targets [that we were working on] but there are factors we have no control over.”

“I think you’ve seen, first of all, in terms of the market over the January window, it’s been, I think the phrase that’s been commonly used, is it’s been a fairly dormant market.

“There’s not been as many transactions. And ultimately then you’re waiting on player availability most of the time, whether that’s on a permanent basis or a loan basis.”
