Erik Ten Hag reveals why Maguire was stripped of captaincy

Former skipper Harry Maguire is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.

The England international has fallen down the pecking order behind Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

He has struggled to live up to the standards needed to maintain at United and is himself frustrated with the lack of playing time.

He is under contract at Old Trafford until the summer of 2025 and Spurs have made inquiries about the England international.

Earlier in July, it was decided that Maguire would have to give up the captain’s armband after three years of service.

Bruno Fernandes is the new club captain and Ten Hag explains his decision to snub Maguire of his captaincy.

He said: “It’s nothing against Harry [stripping the captaincy], it was in advantage of the team. Then you make the decision. But I will not say that Harry isn’t part of this group.

“He has to fight for his position,” the Dutchman continued. “He is a very good centre-back, and I believe in the potential of Harry Maguire. It’s just that he has to prove himself and fight his way into the team. It’s up to him, and I think he can do it.”
