Jonny Evans close to signing one-year contract with Manchester United.

The veteran defender impressed Erik ten Hag after some stellar pre-season performances.

The manager has been impressed by Evans’ leadership and is set to give the defender a one-year contract.

The 35-year-old was released by Leicester City following their shock relegation from the top-flight last season.

Evans came through United’s youth system and has won three Premier League titles in the Alex Ferguson era.

He has won 11 trophies between 2007 and 2015 and made 198 appearances during his spell with Manchester United.

‘I think he [Evans] helped us, as you said, [with] younger players, but also for numbers here,’ Ten Hag said about Evans last week.

‘Jonny wants to stay fit, he still wants a career. I think he played a very good game against Lyon and you could see how he was mentoring the younger players.

‘I think he was pushing the younger players to a higher level and that can be really helpful.
