Manchester United are expected to bolster the squad in the winter transfer window
Jose Mourinho prioritized bolstering his defensive options during the summer as he was not happy with the defensive setup last season, despite being the second best defensive team in the Premier League and keeping the most clean sheets.
The manager was keen to sign a top class centre-back during the transfer window. Manchester United were heavily linked many defenders like Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng, Leonardo Bonucci etc.
But the Red Devils failed to sign anyone before the transfer deadline, with teenage right-back Diogo Dalot being the only defensive signing. They have struggled defensively so far this season as they have won only 3 games out of 6 in the Premier League, keeping 1 clean sheet in the process.
The Portuguese is keen to bolster the backline in the January transfer window and it has been suggested the Premier League giants are ready to back him financially.
Mourinho is considering January deal for frustrated Chelsea ace Gary Cahill according to Daily Star.
The England International has fallen down the pecking order under new manager Maurizio Sarri as he didn’t appear in the first 5 Premier League games of this season for the Blues. David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger were preferred ahead of him.
The 32 year was even left on the bench for the London Outfit’s Europa League opener against PAOK Salonika as they won the game 1-0. But only made his first competitive appearance of the season as a substitute against West Ham last weekend as they were held to draw.
However, the centre-back admitted last week he is willing to leave Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window if he doesn’t earn first team place under the Italian in the following months.
Mourinho is a huge fan of the defender, who he managed him during his second spell at Stamford Bridge. However, a string of other Premier League and Championship clubs are also interested in him.
