Jose Mourinho saw bid for Bundesliga star blocked by Manchester United this summer

The player was heavily linked with the Red Devils before transfer deadline

Jose Mourinho prioritized bolstering his defensive options during the summer as he was not happy with the defensive setup last season, despite being the second best defensive team in the Premier League and keeping the most clean sheets.

The manager was keen to sign a top class centre-back during the transfer window. Manchester United were heavily linked many defenders and one of them was Bayern Munich star Jerome Boateng.

The Germany International joined the Bundesliga giants from Manchester City for a fee of €13.5 million on a four-year deal in 2011. He is considered one of the best defenders in the world

The centre-back has been a mainstay in the defense since joining the club, making more than 260 appearances. He has won six Bundesliga titles and a Champions League to go with numerous other trophies.

But the Red Devils didn’t sign him before the transfer deadline, with teenage right-back Diogo Dalot being the only defensive signing. They have struggled defensively so far this season as they have won only 3 games out of 6 in the Premier League, keeping 1 clean sheet in the process.

Manchester United prevented Mourinho from pushing through an approach for Jerome Boateng over the summer, reports the BBC.

The player even revealed earlier that he had talks with the Potuguese and revealed why the move never happened.

“I called Jose Mourinho, I told him that his interest was an honor for me and thanked him for trying so hard for me,” he told.

“I explained to Jose that it’s difficult to leave Bayern, and if I do, everything has to be in place to top this club.”
