Jose Mourinho expecting Matteo Darmian to stay

The player has been linked with an exit throughout the summer

Matteo Darmian joined Manchester United from Torino for an undisclosed fee believed to be £12.7 million, signing a 4 year contract with an option to extend it by further 1 year in 2015.

The Italy International made significant contributions during his first 2 seasons with the Red Devils despite not being a regular starter for them.

But the 28 year old struggled to make an impression under Jose Mourinho and fell behind the pecking order last season, with the manager preferring Antonio Valencia ahead of him. He just managed to make 16 appearances in all competitions.

The Premier League giants have already completed the signing of teenage full back Diogo Dalot from Porto during the transfer window which indicated that the Italian’s future at Old Trafford might be over.

Though the defender’s contract expires at the end of the next season and has the option to sign on for an extra year at Old Trafford. But the Portuguese manager was also prepared to let him go.

Mourinho even confirmed that the full-back wants to leave the club and the player is also determined to leave despite injuries to Valencia and Dalot. He has been heavily linked with a return to his homeland, with Juventus, Inter and Napoli interested in him.

However, he has featured extensively in the pre-season matches in America and even started in the Premier League opener against Leicester City last Friday.

Mourinho is expecting Darmian to stay at the club as Serie A transfer window closing on Friday and a deal has not been materialised.

“I don’t think he will go,” He told a news conference, as quoted by Goal, ahead of United’s trip to Brighton on Sunday.

“He cannot have any bad feeling towards us because we opened the door for him in case his desire was to go. But for me, it’s good news that Matteo is staying.

“He’s always an option, a reliable player. We know his performance level is that one. We know he always does a job for the team. Right-back, left-back, starting, on the bench. He’s a fantastic professional.

“He’s loved in the group. It’s good news if Matteo is not leaving.”
