Manchester United become the first team to take a pay cut

Manchester United are leading the way right now in English football again.

The English clubs were engaged in a fierce round of meetings and arguments with the Premier League, NHS, and the players over the wage cuts at clubs. Players were unwilling to do so and only wanted to use the proportionate amount of salary which clubs wanted for wage cuts and donate it directly to NHS.

Jordan Henderson led the initiative and started a fund as well. However, the wage cut debate continued in times of this economic crisis with football suspended and now the players at Manchester United have taken cuts to balance the books at United. They are the first club to do so.

This is what club captain Harry Maguire had to say about it.

“I think first and foremost every club will be different,” Maguire told Sky Sports.

“I’m having weekly discussion with the club about how we want to go forward and monitor it, that’s as much as we can say on behalf of our club, we will continue to evaluate and monitor it weekly.”

“I’m sure every week we will evaluate, see where we’re at, and see if we need to do anything regarding deferrals or wage cuts.”

“Every club will be different, have different circumstances, and I’m sure each captain will be speaking on behalf of their clubs on that.”

Do you think the other clubs should follow suit? Or do you think the wage cuts are just measured for rich owners of the clubs to keep their already deep pockets safe from recession?
